Waterford City East had the highest uptake for the Covid Booster vaccine in the county.

The Central Statistics Office has released figures today for vaccinations up to the end of July this year.

The percentage uptake was 63% in the City East, followed by 62% in Lismore, 61% in Portlaw-Kilmacthomas, 59% in Tramore-Waterford City West, 58% in Dungarvan, and 52% in City South.

Waterford City South also had the lowest uptake in Covid vaccines for 5 to 11 year olds at 13%, while City East has the highest at 27%.

It comes as the general HSE school vaccination programme will be getting underway later this month.

Parents and guardians are being asked to keep an eye out for consent forms which will be coming home in schoolbags shortly.

Junior infants will get 2 vaccines, the 4 in one and the MMR against measles mumps and rubella. First year students will receive T-Dap, a version of the 4 in 1 but without the polio and a HPV vaccine.

Dr. Kathleen O Sullivan, Principal Medical Officer with South East Community Healthcare, says while Covid has impacted on the immunisation programme, it has brought a huge awareness to the public of the positive impact vaccination can have.

"Unfortunately, there is a reappearance of some infectious diseases because the uptake rate has dropped," she said.

Dr O Sullivan told WLR that the vaccines children will be receiving are not new, they are boosters or second doses of what they have received in their first year of life.
