Deputy Mayor of Waterford Councilor James Tobin will be laid to rest today.

Councilor Tobin passed away on Monday after being elected as Deputy Mayor just four days previous.

He has been remembered as a devoted family and GAA man in tributes made by people across Waterford and beyond.

Thomas Baldwin, who served with James on the Shamrocks GAA Board in Knockanore, shared one of his memories of the late Fianna Fáil councilor.

"He used to be a selector for years with us when I was playing intermediate, and at the team talks on the Thursday night before the matches I'd always be sitting near him and he'd always take my hurley, and that hurley would get some punishment off the floor when he was trying to motivate us. But by God he kept Shamrocks at the top of the table in county hurling and football for years and we'll be forever grateful for James," he said.

As a mark of respect, the offices of Waterford City and County Council will close to the public from 1 o'clock.

James' funeral mass will take place at 3pm in The Church of Immaculate Conception, Tallow.

Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
