Councillors in Waterford City have voted to approve the construction of 49 social houses in Ballygunner.
The 49 units comprise of six one bed apartments, six 3 bed duplex units, four 3 bed 2 storey houses, 28 2 bed 2 storey houses and five
2 bed single story houses.
They will be located at Ballygunner Castle Road/St. Mary's Place.
At the Metropolitan Council Meeting Fianna Fail's Eddie Mulligan called for the decision to be deferred until the new city and county development plan is completed.
He said
"The biggest representation from the Ballygunner, Williamstown, Knockboy area is the lack of community facilities and I go back to the fact that
whilst this is 49 houses, there is already 110 going through the planning process and based upon the Part A planning process to date, houses we
are building are taking four years to build. I don't think a deterrment of a couple of months will impinge upon the delivery of the houses.
However, Sinn Fein Councillor Pat Fitzgerald disagreed.
"The County Development plan could take two years to put together, we are already talking about this county development plan for the last two years, if not more
and we have not even begun it yet. We have got to go ahead with local authority housing that is desperately needed for young people in this area to put a roof
over their heads and I think this is a disgraceful counter proposal.
All councillors voted to approve the scheme.
