A meeting with all Carrickpherish stakeholders, which had been called off due to Covid restrictions, is now back in planning by Waterford Council's Housing Department.

The meeting will form part of the Council’s strategy to tackle some of the area’s issues, by liaising with those who live in the wider community, and with people involved in developing the locality into the future.

Potential for development of Carrickpherish

Commenting on this Fianna Fail's Eamon Quinlan said:

Carrickpherish has a lot of potential but has effectively been paused since the crash. Outstanding issues around anti-social behaviour are not only making current residents lives difficult, it is actively putting off builders from creating affordable housing estates in the area. Carrickpherish has two primary schools, a library, a sports hub, shop, take away, bus routes etc so the attraction is there if we can get everyone on the same hymn sheet.

The meeting was agreed with Council Chief Executive Michael Walsh and is envisaged to be held at the library in Carrickpherish. Due to Covid restrictions and the need to maintain social distancing, it is not expected to be an open door meeting. However, invites are likely to be extended to each of the local estates' residents associations, commercial operators, developers, anti-social behaviour officers and other interested parties.

“The new lease of life our housing department has from the government's Housing for All initiative has been a real game changer here. We have been stuck in limbo for some time as we have maxed out the number of social housing in the area but can't get individuals to build one off housing for a mortgage of €400k. The path forward here now with our new powers is to facilitate the construction of affordable housing. They are effectively smaller private houses and can even be created in partnership with the private sector," Eamon Quinlan added.

It's expected Waterford Council will release details of the community meeting at Carrickpherish in the coming weeks.
