Construction begins at Newtown School Waterford following years of planning

Early stages of development have begun at Newtown School Waterford following years of plans for an estimated €14 million expansion plan.

It is the aim of the school to be able to accommodate up to 600 students following the works.

Ground broke this week on the early stages of the works, preparing the ground for the installation of modular units.

These modular units are expected to be in place and in use by January 2025.

Within the units, which will mean the school can remain open and functional during construction, there will be 9 classrooms.

These include: an Art room, a Science lab, and a dedicated space for autistic students.

The main building works are expected to begin by next summer.

The works for the main building are currently nearing the final stages of a tender process and will include:

A 4,624sqm three-storey block with general and specialist classrooms, a two-storey entrance block with reception, administration, social/locker areas and staff facilities.

Other features include a single-storey building for students with additional needs along with a 1,149sqm PE and assembly hall with changing facilities.
