Christmas Dinners for those in need will be handed out tomorrow (Christmas Day).

The meals will be handed out from 12.30 pm to 1.30 pm in the yard of St Joseph's School on Parnell Street in Waterford City.

The service caters for around 40 people every year and has been running for decades under the auspices of the Knights of St. Columbanus.

However, committee member Ian Manto says it will have to be done a bit differently this year

"Normally, they would come into St Joseph's School, sit down and we would give them soup, a turkey and ham Christmas Day dinner and sherry trifle.

"With the restrictions in place this year, we're going to have to do it as a takeaway.

"We will still be at St Joseph's School, in the schoolyard with a refrigerated van. We will have pre-packed dinners all ready to take-away."

Ian Manto says the service relies on volunteers, but this year they need to drastically reduce numbers

"We have 10 on the committee but on the day normally in the school, we have so many volunteers that turn up and give their time to help us out in giving out the food and the washing up.

"It's not indoors this year, I would like to say to the volunteers please, please do not turn up this year.

"We really appreciate your help over the previous years and please god in 2021 we will have you back again."

Ian says the meal will have all the trimmings and they will have plenty to spare.

"We're buying it this year from Mary Grimes, she has really looked after us

"Mary is giving us a full packed Christmas day turkey and ham dinner with all the trimmings, sherry trifle, plastic knife, fork, spoon & napkin for 10 euro a head. I don't think she is making too much money on that."

"We would just like to sincerely thank her for coming on board this year and helping us when we are in need."
