As rural areas in the country suffer from a shortage of general practitioners, Cappoquin welcomes a new one.
Dr. Derek Casey has recently been joined by Dr. Immran Khan at the Cappoquin Health Centre, easing the demand for medical services locally.
Speaking to WLR News in Cappoquin, he says he is honored to be part of the community.
"I would echo Doctor Immran's thoughts. The people here were delighted when a GP joined the practice permanently. The community really does value having a GP in place.
"The beauty of being a GP is you actually become part of someone's life. For example, babies that were born three years ago are now toddlers. It is great to see them return.
"The other end of it is you, unfortunately, experience patients passing away, but it does bring you closer to the community. It is one of the best things about being a GP.
The population of the village had dropped as low as 700 people but the regeneration of the area is in full swing thanks to a number of projects.
Dr. Casey continued: "It is really important. Unfortunately, it is getting more difficult to draw doctors to our rural communities. I have spoken about this before. It is a focal point for any village. We get consultations in here from first thing on a Monday morning to last thing on a Friday evening. It is important to offer that service."
