A local councillor has called for vacant former Garda Stations to be brought back into use as accommodation.

Fine Gael's Liam Brazil reiterated his call for such a move at the recent Comeragh District meeting of the local authority.

In particular, he highlighted the potential of the building which was previously home to Leamybrien Garda Station  - citing the amenities and transport links which the area has.

Cllr Brazil also highlighted the potential for former Garda Stations in both Kill and Rathgormack.

"We need to get these buildings back into use," he said.

"If we had one or two families in the building in Leamybrien, for example, it would be fantastic. Every day we're hearing about our housing crisis. These are buildings which are owned by the OPW and they're lying idle."

He has called for the local authority to engage with the OPW on the matter and says there are numerous suitable buildings located across the county.
