A commitment has been given by the local authority to improve the appearance of a monument commemorating Dr Noel Browne.

Located on Bath Street, the monument honours the pioneering politician who was born in the city.

Speaking at the recent Metropolitan District meeting of Waterford Council, Fianna Fáil Councillor Jason Murphy called for action.

"Noel Browne has come to the fore again because RTÉ did a very interesting documentary about his life recently,"he said.

"In relation to the monument, I think it would be nice if we spelled his name properly on it. His surname is actually spelled incorrectly and I would like to see the two dots inserted above the letter 'o' in his first name."

A Council official responded to say that the appearance of the monument would be evaluated.

Dr Browne was elected to the Dáil in 1948 and, after being appointed the Minister for Health, brought in several reforms including a vaccination programme, mass free screening for TB sufferers, and the development of new hospitals and sanatoria.

He was regarded as being a particularly liberal politician during his career.

Dr Browne opposed Church influence in the Irish healthcare system and, in the 1970s, he was the first Irish parliamentarian to call for law reforms in regards to homosexuality
