Female-only homeless emergency accommodation is needed in Waterford.
That's the message from Local Councillor Donal Barry, who says women need a sole space to avail of.
The Independent Councillor raised his concerns at a recent Plenary meeting of Waterford Council.
"Are there any discussions with the Government for any extra female-only homeless accommodation in the City and County? I don't think it is a good option to place females in with male-only provided accommodation.
"I see there that the number of single persons in emergency accommodation has increased in Waterford. What is the breakdown between male and female?".
Director of Services for Housing with Waterford City and County Council, Ivan Grimes gave the following response at the meeting.
"We don't have a gender breakdown as of yet. I do agree, however, that it is not an appropriate long-term response to have Females in a male-only Homeless accommodation.
"We are constantly reviewing Homeless Services in Waterford, and we are looking at the figures over the coming months and monitoring the situation".
