Proposed new laws around penalty points have got the approval of Cabinet ministers.

Shane Ross presented them with plans for graduated penalties, which will see drivers fined more depending on how much over the speed limit they are.

They go up to a €2,000 fine and a court appearance if someone is 30km an hour above the legal limit.

There was some concerns raised by rural Ministers but not the massive row that had been expected.

However, Fianna Fáil say they won't support the idea in the Dáil.
