The pedestrianisation of streets in Waterford has been vital for the survival of businesses in the city according to local Cllr.

Eddie Mulligan says some businesses in the city are calling for an extension to road closures which were implemented over the past number of months.

It comes as Dublin City Council reversed its decision to end road closures on Capel street and Parliament street until the end of September.

Eddie Mulligan says there are businesses in Waterford City that are now looking for some streets to be permanently pedestrianised.

"Bank Lane and Mall Lane have businesses that would have been unable to survive under government restrictions without extending onto the streets.

"The council approved temporary road closures for them that will last until the end of the year but those businesses are now looking for permanent road closures."

Other areas like the Applemarket have seen part-time road closures in operation, but Cllr Mulligan says fulling the pedestrianising that area could be something to look at into the future.

"We've worked a successful compromise there over the past few months that sees businesses closing at 4 o'clock Monday to Friday, 1 o'clock on a Saturday and all day Sundays and Bank Holidays,"

"The current arrangements are working quite well but I would see a time down the road where the Applemarket would be fully pedestrianised.

"At the moment we have to consider the old traditional businesses trying to survive there and we have to also meet the needs of residents in the area," he said.
