Body of man (50s) recovered off Cork Coast

A man in his 50s has died in the sea off the Cork coast.

He was trying to help five people who had got into difficulty in the water at Inch Strand near Midleton.

Shortly before three o'clock yesterday afternoon, Gardaí and local emergency services responded.
The Search and Rescue Coast Guard units at Crosshaven were alerted by the Irish Coast Guard in Valencia, County Kerry.

Rescue Helicopter 117 from Waterford was also tasked to go to the scene.

Four people were rescued from the water. The man in his 50s was removed from the sea and was brought to Cork University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The local coroner has been notified and arrangements will now be made for a post-mortem examination.
