Bells for peace - Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan supports calls for solidarity

A local action group has made calls for a movement across multiple faiths and denominations across Ireland to stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and those affected by the war between Palestine and Israel.

The group who call themselves 'Nobodys' is made up of Inna Kuzmenko, Michael Power, and Rita Lacey.

The group is supported by Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan, Bishop of Waterford and Lismore with a main focus of holding a ringing of bells ceremony nationwide at 11 minutes past 11. a.m., on the 11th day of the 11th month (November 2023) to coincide with the ending of World War 1 at that time in 1918.

The group is calling on all churches and faiths to get involved to support the cause by ringing their church bells at this specific date to stand up against wars taking place in Eastern Europe as well as the Middle East.

On Tuesday, October 3rd, Bishop Cullinan was in conference with The Irish Bishops Conference, at Maynooth College, where this was put on the Agenda. This was endorsed and passed unanimously by the Synod of Bishops.

The group as a collective says, "We know all too well that the position/influence of the 'Church' has changed with time, but the promises of God have not, and so we are reaching out in as many ways as possible to to make this happen, so that the Bells of Peace that ring throughout our city, county, and country, and hopefully beyond other borders will shatter the silence of complacency, reminding us that we are all inextricably linked, and further remind us that it is not borders that separate and divide us, but unbridled inhumanity to humanity.

"It is without doubt, that a certain political input will be requested, as this is not merely an Ecumenical exercise, and we hope for a concentrated and willing participation from our Leaders, and to that end, it is intended that the Ceann Comhairle will be invited to ring the Bell in the Dail Chambers at the appointed time."

We will have more on this story in the coming days.
