An additional bank holiday will take place on March 18th this year.
The news was confirmed by the government this morning as it was also announced that public healthcare workers will receive a €1,000 bonus tax free payment for their services during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Healthcare workers in hospices and nursing homes will also be recognised for the payment.
The bank holiday, on March 18th, is set to be a commemorative event in remembrance of the 6,000 people who have lost their lives to Covid in Ireland.
The new annual public holiday will then move to St. Brigid's Day, February 1st, from 2023.
It is expected that further details on the plan will be provided once today's Cabinet meeting concludes.
