'Ask for Angela' campaign relaunched at SETU

People in Waterford are being reminded to 'Ask for Angela' if they feel unsafe on a night out.

First rolled out in the city seven years ago, the campaign relaunched this week in partnership with South East Technological University.

SETU's Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Manager Roisin Shanahan spoke to WLR News outlining their goals.

"The action plan for tackling sexual harassment is 2023 - 2026 and over those years we are hoping to raise awareness, tackle sexual violence towards students and staff, deliver training, and make our community more aware.

"The campaign links in with the work that we are doing at SETU to help our members of the University feel safer and to help us implement our action plan."

SETU Student Union President, Mark Dunne says it's an initiative for both students and the wider community.

"You go to the bar, and ask the staff if Angela is here. It is a code word for something that is wrong. They then give you the option of providing assistance, such as an escape route or in other instances calling the guards."

Meanwhile, Waterford has, once again, received the coveted Purple Flag accreditation, which represents the gold standard of the management of evening and night-time economies.
