Secondary school students in the Ardmore and surrounding areas have no access to a public school bus service.

Councillor Conor McGuinness has voiced his concerns regarding the lack of the service for students in the area.

Speaking to WLR News, he says there should be a better school bus service in the area.

He added:" Families from Ardmore, Clashmore, Grange and Kinsalebeg and surrounding areas are being put at a disadvantage when it comes to a school bus service.

At the moment there is no public school bus service running from Ardmore to Dungarvan it actually runs to Youghal in Cork."

Parents have recently voiced their frustrations to the councillor with a petition of over 400 signatures due to be sent to the minister of education.

Families want to be able to send their children to school in Dungarvan he said, "They want their children to be educated in Waterford. In many cases they play hurling, football or camogie and they want to play in Waterford and attend school in Dungarvan. It is their nearest town it is where their friends go."

A private service from Ardmore to Dungarvan is currently in place, but this is at full capacity.

"At the moment parents who want to send their children to school in Dungarvan rather than Youghal can't avail of any public CIE Bus Éireann school bus service."

The councillor hopes the petition will shed light on the issue and a service will be made available for families in the area.

"There just simply is not enough capacity and that does not suit every family and instead of being forced to send their children to another county and they should have the choice to send them to school in Dungarvan." he said.
