A local Councillor has called on Waterford Council to help keep animation workers in the county.
Fianna Fáil Councillor Eamon Quinlan was speaking at the most recent plenary meeting of Waterford Council and has called for an animation studio to be built in the county citing both Dungarvan and Waterford city as possible locations.
SETU currently provides a Higher Diploma in Science in Production Management for Digital Animation in Waterford city as well as a Bachelor of Science course in Computing in Interactive Digital Art and Design in Carlow.
"This is an area that SETU trains local Waterford and young people from the South-East to acquire the skills of animation yet there is no animation studio in County Waterford," he said.
The Tramore and Waterford City West Cllr suggested locations such as Dungarvan, Waterford City, the North Quays and O'Connell Street.
"As we develop these areas, we can bring in this type of industry because there's Waterford people with these skills and unfortunately they are leaving the area and it's a high investment, high turnaround area," he said.
In Dublin, a major gaming conference took place this week.
The NEXUS Games Conference hosted approximately 300 domestic and international games developers, publishers, investors and service providers.
It has been estimated that the digital gaming sector in Ireland could be worth as much as €250 million.
