A Waterford man will take on the National 4 Peaks Challenge next month, in the hope of raising vital funds for the Solas Cancer Support Centre.

Kevin Phelan has already raised over €10,000 - as he seeks to climb the highest peak in each province in the space of just 44 hours.

Kevin was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2022 - while his wife Lena was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2023.

Thankfully, both Kevin and Lena are now recovering following successful treatment, and are now working to raise money in the fight against cancer.

"I'm taking part in the National 4 Peaks Challenge in August 2024 and will climb the highest peak in each province in 44 hours - Slieve Donard, Lugnaquilla, Carrauntoohil & Mweelrea", said Kevin.

"I was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2022 and had a testicle removed. I was monitored closely and unfortunately in October 2023 the cancer had spread to my lymph nodes and I started intensive chemotherapy for three months. Thankfully my diagnosis was early and the treatment was successful."

"Unfortunately, this was not the only diagnosis we received as during my second dose of treatment my wife Lena was diagnosed with breast cancer in November and would have to undergo two operations, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Thankfully her treatment was also successful and she is now recovering. I've chosen to fundraise for Solas Cancer Support Centre. All funds raised here will go directly to this great cause."
