27 patients transferred to UHW overnight from Wexford General Hospital

Transfers are continuing from Wexford General Hospital to University Hospital Waterford following a fire which broke out in the hospital yesterday.

It has been confirmed to WLR News that 27 patients were transferred overnight while at least a further 15 are expected across today.

The emergency department in Wexford General Hospital remains closed at the moment, while at least 200 patients have been transferred to hospitals in the region.

The nearest emergency departments are in St. Luke's, Kilkenny and University Hospital Waterford.

Emergency services stood down last night and in the early hours of this morning.

The National Ambulance Service operations stood down at 2.30am, while units of the Fire Service and An Garda Síochána stood down at midnight.

Oxygen supply in Wexford General remains impacted.

An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar has released a statement this morning expressing his shock regarding the fire.

He says: "This terrible incident strikes to the heart of the community in Wexford and the broader region."

"Fire crews and other emergency personnel have been fighting this major emergency for many hours. We pay tribute to their dedication and heroism."

He extended his thoughts to the hundreds of patients who have been evacuated from the hospital, as well as their families, staff and management.

Government have committed to do whatever is required in the aftermath of this emergency.
