Tramore Educate Together has welcomed the confirmation from the Department of Education that a new building for the school is needed.
The department was examining the possibility of the school moving into the Glor na Mara junior school building when it's vacated at the end of June.
However, an architect's report commissioned by the Educate Together said it was not fit for purpose.
The school will now partially relocate to 6 prefabs on the site in September.
Local TD Marc Ó Cathasaigh says there isn't much difference between the cost of refurbishing the old school versus building a new one:
"The cost of bringing the building up to a modern education standard is something in the order of 90% of a new build cost. So in that kind of scenario, it makes more sense to use the land for a new building so that the children in Tramore can get the best of education facilities within their town.
"I know the building intimately - what's referred to in Tramore as the 50pence piece building. And while it's a lovely school and it was a lovely school built at the time, it's not suitable for a modern classroom.
"It doesn't have the room that you would need, for example, to do your science experiments or to have the different areas for your maths or literacy - that's required in modern teaching methods."
Deputy Ó Cathasaigh is also calling for a complete audit of educational facilities in Tramore to be carried out.
He says there is a growing demand for school places in the town and there's a real need for some planning:
"Something that I've been talking to the Minister for Education about extensively is to audit Tramore as a town, as a growing town. To have a look at the educational needs now and into the future. And also to have a look at the buildings that exist in the town, so we can begin to match education needs with the facliities that we do have in Tramore."
