People living in Ireland with a UK driving licence are being reminded they have 60 days to change to the Irish version before it expires.

From January 1st, it will be illegal for anyone living here with a UK licence to drive as the Brexit transition period ends.

New government figures show 17,000 people have yet to make the switch.

Fine Gael TD, Neale Richmond, says online applications will start being accepted over the coming weeks.

"Unfortunately we have the situation that if you need to exchange your driving licence you have to make an appointment in person which are only reserved for essential workers.

"The government is planning in the next fortnight to move that online however we have to make sure that this is a priority and we don't take our eye off the ball on this - we need to get it done ASAP."
