Plans to fully pedestrianise the Apple Market won't be going ahead.

Waterford Council had planned to close the space to traffic after 11 o'clock in the morning for the next three months.

However Director of Services Fergus Galvin says the proposal faced major opposition and the council will now draw up new plans.

"We haven't currently decided what exactly we're going to do with it. We did advertise a proposed temporary road closure there from 11am in the morning onwards. There was almost unanimous opposition to it I've got nobody atall from any quarter who spoke up in favour of it. Every single business in the area, and I have a written petiion in for it, were against it along with residents in the locality."
