Gardaí in Waterford are warning of a scam which involves fraudulent emails purporting to be from Revenue.
Gardai says the fraudsters are seeking people's bank details.
Crime Prevention Sergeant for the Waterford Garda Division, Brendan Roche, says the emails say you're due a tax refund:
He told WLR NEWS
"Normally, the sum ranges from 500 to 1,500 euros and they are invited to click on a link to claim the funds. Obviously once they click on the link they are asked to
hand over their bank details. We would advise people for a start, that the revenue commissioners are not going to be contacting you to say that they are giving you
money back. These emails, they take various forms, either bank drafts or people saying that money has been lodged to your account, just make sure that you are
not caught in that situation during this COVID 19 period when services are on a lockdown."
He says fraudsters are using the pandemic to take advantage of people:
"When people have not got access to financial institutions that they deal with on a regular basis, people take advantage of that opportunity and try to fill the void with
attempts to swindle and con people out of their money. So if people stick to their normal routine, if they receive an email of any description that they are concerned about,
all they need do is pick up the phone, contact their bank or financial institution and make sure it is the genuine email. "
