The 2025 Safer Internet Day marks the 22nd year of this now globally landmark event in the online safety calendar.
This year's event theme is Prepare / Protect / Thrive: Navigating Algorithms and Influencers. Research shows that 26% of children in Ireland have encountered harmful content online. With access to so much information online, Safer Internet Day will explore how to protect and empower children and young people to navigate the opportunities and challenges of these powerful influences. Hundreds of children and young people will take part in initiatives around the country to mark Safer Internet Day.
Safer Internet Day is a great opportunity to get children and young people involved and talking about online safety, this is something that is very much part of their lives, and has many benefits but we must recognise the challenges.
Schools can get involved by visiting Webwise.ie/saferinternetday - there are scripted lessons/talks, activities, free wristbands available and more.
The Aim:
Prepare: Provide children and young people with resources and support to develop digital media literacy skills from an early age.
Protect: Explore ways to best protect children online through safety by design and reflect on the current state of play.
Thrive: Empower children and young people to thrive in the digital world through active participation and education.
Supports for Parents
In addition to the free support available from the Irish SIC via webwise.ie/parents hub, National Parents Council Training and helpline and ISPCC Digital Ready Hub.
Webwise will host a series of FREE webinars to empower parents to support their children as they navigate the challenges and opportunities of the online world.
Each session dives into key aspects of the digital world, from safe communication and healthy online play to identifying dis/misinformation and understanding how algorithms and privacy affect daily digital life. The series is in partnership with a host of experts and stakeholders including Coimisún na Meán, the National Parents Council, Dr. Colman Noctor and others.
