Global tech giant Facebook has been rebranded as Meta. The 'Metaverse' plans to bring together its suite of apps and technologies.
The news was announced online by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
Zuckerberg said existing apps like Facebook and Instagram will keep their names but will now be part of the parent company, Meta.
Facebook has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons lately; the rebrand follows widespread media reports about whistle blower revelations with regards to how Facebook handles user safety.
As part of the announcement, Zuckerberg said there were plans to hire 10,000 people across the EU as part of the 'Metaverse business.'
The metaverse is a concept coined in the 1992 sci-fi novel Snow Crash. It describes a kind of 3D reality of the internet where people are represented as Avatars.
