Former US president Donald Trump is launching a new media company with a social media platform called TRUTH Social.
Trump made the announcement less than a year after he was expelled from popular platforms like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. The expulsion was a result of his role in inciting a violent insurrection at the US Capitol.
Donald Trump's reasons for launching TRUTH Social
Mr Trump says his goal in launching the Trump Media & Technology Group and its TRUTH Social app was to "stand up to the tyranny of Big Tech."
In a statement, he said:
“We live in a world where the Taliban has a huge presence on Twitter, yet your favourite American President has been silenced. This is unacceptable.”
The build-up to the launch of the platform
Donald Trump has been hinting at launching TRUTH Social for quite some time. The former President was very prolific on Twitter. On this platform he regularly berated rivals and critics, and broke news about the White House Administration. Since his expulsion from major social media platforms, he has regularly sent press releases with tweet-like content.
