April Brophy a Mountain Leader of Sliabh Hiking spoke to us recently and gave us a guide to start hiking.

The new year is the perfect time to embrace a fresh start, set new goals, and reconnect with nature. Hiking is an excellent way to improve fitness, boost mental well-being, and explore the beauty of Waterford and beyond. Whether you're a complete beginner or simply looking to develop a hiking routine, January is a great month to get started. Here are some top tips by local Mountain Leader April Brophy of Sliabh Hiking for starting your journey this year!

1. Start Small and Build Gradually

When starting out, choose shorter, low-intensity walks to build confidence and fitness. Local trails such as the Waterford Greenway or the easy section of the Mahon Falls Walk are ideal options. Focus on enjoying the experience rather than pushing yourself too hard.

Set realistic goals and gradually increase the distance and difficulty of your hikes as your fitness improves. Remember, consistency is key—aim for one or two hikes per week to build a routine that sticks.

2. Invest in the Right Gear

Having the right clothing and equipment will make all the difference for a comfortable hike, especially in January's unpredictable weather.

  • Footwear: Invest in sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good grip.
  • Clothing: Dress in layers. A moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating mid-layer, and a waterproof outer layer will keep you warm and dry.
  • Essentials: Bring a hat, gloves, and a backpack with water, snacks, a first aid kit, and a map or phone with GPS.

You don't need to break the bank to get started, but quality gear will ensure your hikes are enjoyable and safe.

3. Plan Your Route

Before heading out, research and plan your hike carefully. Start with well-marked trails that are beginner-friendly. Here are two beginner routes recommended by April:

  • Croagh Wood Walk Flat, scenic, and family-friendly.
  • Dunmore Cliff Walk: A beautiful mix of coastal views and gentle trails.

Always check the weather forecast, tell someone where you're going, and aim to finish before dark, as daylight hours are short in January.

4. Bring a Friend or Join a Group

Hiking with others is a fantastic way to stay motivated, enjoy good company, and stay safe. If you're nervous about starting alone, consider asking a friend to join you or joining a local hiking group.

Group hikes offer support, guidance, and a chance to meet like-minded people who share your passion for the outdoors.

5. Focus on the Experience, Not Just the Fitness

While hiking is a great workout, don’t forget to enjoy the journey. Take in the fresh air, appreciate the views, and listen to the sounds of nature. January landscapes have a unique beauty, from frosty trails to misty mountain views.

Bring along a flask of hot tea or coffee and some healthy snacks to keep your energy up and turn your hike into a mindful, rewarding experience.

6. Stay Safe and Leave No Trace

Safety should always be your top priority when hiking, especially in winter. Here are some tips:

  • Stick to marked trails and avoid venturing too far from known paths.
  • Carry a fully charged phone, and consider downloading maps ahead of time.
  • Leave no trace: Take all rubbish home, respect wildlife, and preserve the beauty of the trails for others.

Final Thoughts

January is a time for new beginnings, and hiking is one of the best ways to improve your physical and mental well-being while exploring the natural beauty around you. With the right gear, preparation, and mindset, you’ll quickly fall in love with the trails.

So grab your boots, step outside, and take that first step—you won’t regret it.
