Waterford primary schools could benefit from a student meal scheme.
Councillor Eamon Quinlan raised the topic at this months Plenary Council meeting.
The initiative is in existence beside an already existing meals programme.
Speaking at the meeting, Councillor Quinlan says funding is an issue for some schools.
He says: "There is a second parallel scheme which many are unaware of. With this, the local authority can recoup 50% of the costs by working with schools. Alot of schools aren't able to fund it or host the meals programme through the current scheme."
Speaking about further options for schools, Cllr. Quinlan says an additional scheme called the Urban School Meals Scheme is an option for schools.
He added his wish to see it expand across the schools in Waterford.
"If we liaise with all the schools across the city and county, we could partner with them to have central locations and we, as a Council could work to recoup 50% of the costs to provide hot meals to national school children."
Director of Services for Planning, Kieran Kehoe said the Council would be interested in hearing from schools, with the intent of furthering the initiative.
