1. Cabinet agrees to planned reopening of society but "too soon" for foreign holidays

Government Ministers have signalled they want as wide a reopening as possible in May as the State’s vaccination programme continues to suffer from supply shortfalls and restrictions on the use of jabs. Meanwhile the Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has ruled out foreign holidays in June saying the domestic economy needs to open first.

2. Ambitious plans for Waterford Investment brand launched

Waterford – Find Your Future’ is a collaboration between Waterford City & County Council, Waterford Chamber of Commerce and Waterford Institute of Technology, aimed at encouraging companies to invest in the city. The group also proposes Waterford become a decarbonising zone, by having electrical supply exclusively from renewable energy sources, all transport to be powered by electricity or hydrogen, and all industrial practices to be carbon neutral by 2040.

3. Carphone Warehouse to close all Irish stores

Carphone Warehouse is to close more than 80 stores in the Republic, with the loss of almost 500 jobs. The company has 69 standalone and 12 stores within stores. There are two standalone stores in Waterford – one in the city on Barronstrand Street and one in Dungarvan on High Street

4. Appeal against life sentence for murder of Waterford pensioner

The man who was jailed for life for the murder of Waterford pensioner Paddy Lyons, has told the Court of Appeal that there is no proof that he caused the injury that led to the 90 year old’s death.

6. Fire Crews and Garda dealing with blaze in Kilbarry

Fire Crews and Gardaí are attended a blaze at Greenfields on the Old Tramore Road in Waterford City this afternoon. The R675 between Kingfisher and the Tramore Road Roundabout is currently closed.
