Pauric Mahony is the September winner of the Waterford Sports Awards, in association with WLR and the Granville Hotel.
Mahony was the star of the show as Ballygunner blew aside Abbeyside in the County Senior Hurling Final to capture a record-breaking 11 titles in a row. The former Waterford captain was man-of-the-match on the day as he knocked over 0-11 - four of which came from play, in the 2-28 to 2-10 win. Mahony finished the championship as top scorer yet again, with 1-48 across five games.
Speaking on accepting the award on October 29th, Mahony said: “It's obviously a lovely honour to be recognised on a personal level. It’s been a while since we last were on the pitch, so you nearly forget about what happened in the Waterford Championship, it's nice to be able to reflect in a positive way."
Mahony will join his younger brother Kevin on stage in January as the latter was the recipient of the August award. Pauric says it will be great to share the stage with his sibling.
“He's been doing well. He had a good first year with Waterford as well. There were some good performances there in the Munster Championship. He carried that form into the Waterford Club Championship. It’s kind of a fresh start again. You need to try and re-gather your form after a long break. Hopefully, he can continue that on into the Munster Championship now as well.”
Each month, an outstanding sports star will be crowned the winner of the monthly WLR Granville Waterford Sports Awards.
The 12 monthly recipients will then gather for a black-tie Gala Banquet at the Granville Hotel in January 2025, where the first WLR Granville Waterford Sports Star of the Year will be revealed.
