Ballygunner defender Philip Mahony has announced his retirement from inter county hurling.

The 28 year old has been a Waterford regular over the past nine years.

He missed the 2014 campaign after sustaining a double leg fracture and dislocated ankle in a club game but a year later, he was back in the Waterford team that won the 2015 National Hurling League.

He won a Munster medal in 2010 and a National League in 2015, started the 2017 All Ireland final and was nominated for an All Star on three occasions.
