The FAI say the association's vice-president, Paul Cooke, will act as Executive Lead for the next couple of weeks.
The decision was made by the board at a meeting last night.
It was held after John Foley decided not to take up the role of interim CEO.
The board also agreed the most pressing issue was the appointment of the four independent directors and the independent chairperson.
Mr Cooke, a former Director with Waterford United, is a chartered accountant who has worked as CEO of the Irish Daily Star and the Sunday Business Post newspapers.
He was appointed to the sub-committee overseeing ongoing investigations and procedures at the FAI in May and was elected vice-president of the organisation in July.
In the meantime, the Board has decided that vice-president Paul Cooke will act as the Executive Lead for the next couple of weeks as the FAI awaits the appointment of an Independent Chairperson.
