A Waterford soccer player received an award for telling the referee his goal should be disallowed because it was a handball.

14 year old Ider Boldbataar plays with the Bohemians 15a team.

He was given the award by the Irish Soccer Referee's Society, following an incident at a league game against Piltown AFC in Kildalton last month.

During that match, Ider scored a goal just before half time. But he subsequently admitted to the referee that the goal was a handball, and it was disallowed.

Bohs would have won the game had the goal been awarded, but instead it ended in a draw.

Pat Fitzgerald, the referee on the night, was so impressed by his honesty that he set up a Fairplay Award through the Irish Soccer Referee's Society, of which Ider is now the inaugural winner.

He was presented with a framed certificate and a trophy last night after Bohemian's final game of the season against Tramore AFC at Graun Park.

Handing over the prize was referee Pat Fitzgerald, and  Dave Cullen, committee member of the Schoolboy League.

Speaking to WLR, Bohemians Club Secretary and coach of the 15a side Ian Barrett said:

"We're very proud of Ider, he's a great player, and his behaviour typifies his character. He's a credit to the club and to his parents."
