After over 500 five hour trips from Waterford to Mullingar, Michael Ryan stepped down as Westmeath hurling manager over the
weekend.
He said it's always going to be a battle in Westmeath because they only have 13 clubs, which is just two thirds of the West Waterford division.
Michael said the clubs were totally committed and there is a lot of young players coming through.
He says he feels three or four years is enough for a Manager and he had some great days and learnt a lot during his time with Westmeath.
Michael says he enjoyed every minute of his four years as Westmeath hurling manager.
He initially agreed a three year contract and stayed on for a further year following a request from the County Board.
He's going to step back and take some time before deciding what to do next.
