The Waterford ladies football team face a relegation battle after a 3-12 to 0-5 defeat at the hands of Galway in Birr yesterday.
First half goals from Leanne Coen, Roisin Leonard and Ailbhe Davoren sent the Connacht champions through to the All Ireland quarter finals. The Déise will meet Tipperary in the relegation play-offs next month.
Manager Pat Sullivan feels that the team are low on confidence at the moment: We just need that little break, we didn't get the break last week. Now, we just need to park everything that's happened because there's a completely different scenario facing us. We face a completely different beast in Tipp. It's the derby game that none of the two of us would want. There's never, never anything between the two of us. Tipp won't like facing us and we're no different facing Tipp." He added that "we need to really, really look at staying in senior football, and that's the key. We need that for the girls coming through, and more importantly for the girls that are on this panel they deserve to be in senior football next year and they're going to have to be."
Meanwhile, Grainne Kenneally has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury during the first round loss to Westmeath. She will undergo surgery in August.
