Sligo Rovers climbed to third in the Premier Division after securing a 2-0 victory against Waterford at The Showgrounds.
Waterford has had difficulty finding form lately, with four defeats in their most recent five league matches.
Despite losing 7-0 to Drogheda United in their last match, the hosts had managed to win three out of their last five games.
Speaking to League of Ireland Television post-match, Assistant Manager Matt Lawlor said it was a disappointing result.
"Disappointing, massively. Under-performed, out-fought, out-battled, all over the park pretty much. There were a couple of duels possibly, but yeah, nothing that we're about.
"Apologies to the fans that travelled in the numbers. That's not us, it won't be repeated and the lads have just been told.
"If we could put my finger on it, we'd be the top managers in the world. It's not through lack of effort. Tonight probably looks like that, but it's not through lack of effort.
"It's a combination of things. We've had a turnover of players, but we've got a really big squad in there, a really good squad that can't be turning in performances like that. Absolutely no chance that that can happen.
"We'll get back on the training ground. We'll reassess. We'll readdress."
