Three-time All Star Ken McGrath is glad to see the Walsh Park redevelopment get the green light but would like to see a couple of tweaks made to the plans. The Mount Sion legend made his championship debut against Tipperary at the city venue in 1996.
"I'm delighted it's Walsh Park. I've always felt that Walsh Park is the right place to put it. I wouldn't be jumping up and down about the plans, I think we could have been a bit more ambitious. People might say I'm mad but I think that the main stand could be curved fully around where the shop and entrance is and make it a small bit unique. You could cover it fully over to where the dressing rooms are now. It would make it unique. I would love to see a small bit more imagination but I think it's the right decision to keep it in Walsh Park. It's the home of Waterford hurling and it's great to have it in the city.
He doesn't see parking as an obstacle. "Thurles, Croke Park and the Gaelic Grounds are all in built up areas. They all have a problem with parking. You'd swear that Waterford was the only place to have a problem with parking. It's not, it's everywhere. You couldn't get more inner city than Croke Park."
The Waterford hurlers are looking to make it four wins out of four when they travel to Dublin on Sunday. McGrath lost two league matches in Parnell Park. In 2009, Davy Fitzgerald brought the team to Bernard Dunne's World Title bout against Ricardo Cordoba before taking on the Dubs. "It was a brilliant boxing match, Bernard Dunne won the World Championship in the Point. We probably relaxed too much. We were all eating popcorn and sweets, thinking we were at the cinema and forgetting we had a league game the next day!"
