Three Wildcats' U20s picked for Ireland duty

Three Waterford Wildcats' U20 players have been named in the Irish U20 basketball side ahead of their 2024 campaign.

Sarah Hickey, Caitlin Gloeckner and Orla Dullaghan have all gotten the nod from head coach Karl Kilbride.

Hickey, who has already played at senior level is included in the squad while she still makes the age grade.

Her Wildcats' clubmate Caitlin Gloeckner makes the step up from U18 level for the first time while Orla Dullaghan is also included in the squad.

Kilbride made his selection after a busy Christmas period with an open-door trial assessment held to unearth potential talent.

"Having seen so many of the girls play at National League and Super League this season and then getting around to the U20 cup games, we knew we'd have a really tough call on our hands with the level of talent that's currently playing in Ireland, let alone people who are playing abroad," said Kilbride.

The head coach added that the trials were a huge benefit to him and hs put him in a position to name a strong squad.

"Having talent is just a small part of it. We now need to spend the next few months trying to harness that talent and create a team, an environment, and a culture that are good enough and strong enough to go compete at the highest level. "
