Former Waterford defender Brian Flannery says that the league has lost its lustre. The provincial championship is now the be all and end all for inter county managers.

"The National Hurling League is now a pre-season competition," he told WLR's Lár Na Páirce show. "The priority for Liam Cahill and Davy Fitzgerald is to get through the Munster round robin. Particularly for Waterford and Tipperary, two counties who didn't qualify last year, that has to be the priority. If we're sitting down here in July, at the end of the championship, we won't be too bothered about where Waterford or Tipperary were back in March. It is all about the championship."

He also believes that tickets for league games are too expensive. The GAA increased the price from 15 euros to 18 euros this season. "We talk about the cost of living crisis and the cost of energy. I got an ESB bill through the door and it frightened me. I'm not so sure that the timing was right."
