A late Dan Shanahan goal and 2-11 from younger brother Maurice helped Lismore into the SHC quarter finals last night as they had 23 points to spare against Passage at Fraher Field (5-26 to 1-15).

The black and amber needed to win by seventeen and fired 4-14 in the second half to advance. Former county panellist Paudie Prendergast chipped in with 2-4.

Lismore selector Brendan Landers said that Big Dan remains a major figure for the club. "Dan still has a lot to offer to us. We don't have huge numbers. You see what he can do. It wasn't a bad finish and he missed a sitter as well!"

Maurice, who has scored 2-35 this season, is up there with the top players in the county in his opinion. "I rate him as one of the best if not the best club hurler in the county. He's done some amazing things for this team."

Ballygunner, Abbeyside and De La Salle are also through to the last eight. The Gunners are now unbeaten in 30 SHC matches. Two first half goals from Dessie Hutchinson gave them a 2-19 to 1-17 win against Tallow. There was a fiery ending as Barry Coughlan was sent off on two yellows before Shane O’Sullivan and Robbie Geary received straight reds from Alan Kissane for an off the ball incident. "To be honest with you, I didn't really see it," said Gunners boss Darragh O'Sullivan. "I'll have a look at it and see what happened. Look, the referee is a good referee and if he sent him off, he had due cause to send him off."

Elsewhere, Stephen Enright converted a last minute penalty as Abbeyside earned a draw with Roanmore (2-10 to 0-16) in Carrickbeg. Dungarvan enjoyed a 26 point win over Clonea (2-31 to 1-8) as Ryan Donnelly and Patrick Curran got 2-17 between them. Evan McGrath shot 1-9 as Mount Sion beat Fourmilewater 2-19 to 2-11.

The draw for the play-offs was made last night. These games will take place on the weekend of August 24/25.

Waterford SHC Play-Offs: Mount Sion v Clonea, Dungarvan v Fourmilewater, Roanmore v Ballyduff Upper, Tallow v Passage.
