Roanmore 1-20, Clonea 0-15
Roanmore have notched their first win of the 2021 Senior hurling championship.
Having been bested by Passage in round one, they returned to Walsh Park with a singular goal to get their hands on two points come hell or high water.
Manager Peter Queally said that today was all about the result. His side struggled to get a foothold in their game last weekend and today made amends for that results.
We got the workman-like performance. The attitude was good from the word go. We were still up in the stand last week after ten minutes; we just didn't get out of the blocks. We had it in our head today that we had to start well.
I wouldn't say we were great by any means, but we just worked hard and got the result that we needed.
Life was made a bit easier for the sky blue with Clonea shooting eight wides throughout the afternoon; that combined with Clonea not registering a score from play until the 26th minute, provided Roanmore a chance to put daylight between the sides.
At halftime, Roanmore had double Clonea's score with 1-11 and 0-7 points on the scoreboard for the sides.
Of Clonea's 15 points scored, it was Jason Gleeson who popped over 11, with Micahel Curry and Willie Hahessy adding o0ne each, while Billy Power hit a point and a 65.
If Clonea needed Jason Gleeson to keep the scoreboard ticking, the same could be said for Roanmore with their captain Gavin O Brien hitting nine for his team. Elsewhere, Waterford goalkeeper Billy Nolan added three free's from long range, while Ethan FLyyn, Emmet O' Toole, Lee Hearne and Cian Wadding all registered on the board.
