Tallow native Ricky Kiely has won a bronze medal at the European Schoolboy Boxing Championships in Turkey.

Ricky, who trains with Midleton Boxing Club in Cork, fought in the 80kg division - guaranteeing his medal with a win against Moldova's Ilia Hornet in last Tuesday's evening session.

It was a tightly fought encounter, with Ricky taking the bronze medal on a split decision having got the nod from the Armenian, Turkish and Polish judges.

Fighting just 24 hours later in the European semis, Ricky lost out to a talented Ukrainian boxer - Yosyp-Vladyslav Kozakevych.

It has been a fantastic twelve months for the Tallow youngster, who also has three Irish titles to his name as well as the European bronze.

Ricky came home to a packed club in Midleton this week to celebrate his achievement. He has been boxing for ten years and will be hoping to add to his growing medal haul in the weeks to come.
