Former county secretary Timmy O'Keeffe has called for an independent review of Waterford hurling. He made the proposal at Monday's board meeting in Dungarvan.
The Clashmore/Kinsalebeg clubman has suggested the names of Michael Walsh Chief Executive of Waterford City and County Council, former All Ireland winning manager with Galway Cyril Farrell, Waterford and Ballygunner legend Fergal Hartley, Dermot Cantillon from Horse Racing Ireland and former managing director of Glanbia John Moloney.
"What was I saying on Monday was if we got a group of five or six independent people and some of them who might have connections to the GAA just to look at how we're managing our county teams," O'Keeffe told WLR's Lár Na Páirce show. "Have we enough expertise? Are they getting enough support from supporters, the county board, the executive and sponsors? What level of expertise do we need? That should be for both senior and minor and also maybe we need to look at the development squads to see if we're developing players in the right way through that system."
He fears that Waterford could fall further down the hurling pecking order. "The time to look at it is now. There's no point getting into decline and then saying in ten years' time 'it was a pity we didn't do that.' You see with Offaly when you go into decline it's very, very hard to get out of it."
