Former captain Tommy Prendergast is back with the Waterford footballers for the 2021 league campaign.

The Déise welcome Carlow to Fraher Field on Saturday evening at 7 o'clock in round one of Division 4 South.

"Delighted to back," Prendergast told WLR's On The Ball show. "I got the call 13 or 14 weeks ago, so I committed to it then. I didn't want to come back and be found out so I'm happy enough with the condition I'm in. Everyone has been doing their own bit and training has been very enjoyable since we came back. Between everything that's going on, you've got to take a step back and say 'this is what I love doing.' This is why I play. I play for games, I play for training, I play for the team. It's great to be back really."

New boss Shane Ronayne has been impressed by the Kilrossanty midfielder. “He came back in brilliant shape, you’d never think he was away. He has shown fantastic leadership. We have a very young squad and the likes of Tommy Prendergast, Tony Grey, Brian Looby and Conor Murray, these guys are very important. Tommy is a good voice at training and he has been fantastic since he came back in. Having him there is a huge boost to us.”
