West Waterford's Mícheál Power has become just the second Waterford man to break the 4-minute mile.
The Ballinamuck native was competing in the Arkansas Invitational Indoor meeting in the US on Friday evening for his college, Tulsa University.
Although narrowly beaten by Washington State University's Lexington Hilton, he became the second Waterford man, after David McCarthy in 2012, to break the 4-minute mile - recording a time of 3 minutes 58.76 seconds.
In a post on their social media on Friday night, West Waterford Athletics Club congratulated Mícheál on his achievement.
"He wrote himself into the history books," the post reads, "...Mícheál, who was home over the Christmas break, was training diligently for this event as he felt he was coming into the shape needed to have a crack at this 4-minute barrier."
They have described this latest achievement as "hugely positive progression" for him.
When David McCarthy achieved the same feat almost 11 years ago, he also did so in the US when he ran 3.55.75 indoors in Boston.
He then followed that up with a 3.57.85 finish in Cork in 2013.
Mícheál, who is the son of renowned local chef, Eunice Power, is just shy of his 24th birthday and previously made history when he was part of the team that secured Gold at the European U-23 Cross-Country Championships in 2021.
West Waterford Athletics Club have now wished him the best of luck with his upcoming 3,000 metre indoor race in a few weeks.
