The 148th Golf Open Championship is underway at Royal Portrush.

Scottish golfer Bob McIntyre, whose caddie Greg Milne is from Waterford, shot a strong first round to finish on 3 under, with a first round score of 68.

On finishing he was just one shot off the leader group which included Offaly man Shane Lowry on 4 under.

Darren Clarke got golf's Open Championship underway on his home course, enjoying a solid start.

After hitting the opening tee shot at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland - he registered an even-par first round score of 71.

Tournament favourite Rory McIlroy endured a nightmare start, the four-time major winner opened with a quadruple bogey and was five-over after three but birdies on 7 and 9 took  McILroy back to 3 over.
