Local rivals do battle in The Best of the Far West

The Best of the Far West hurling tournament will take place on Saturday evening at Páirc Eamonn de Paor in Tallow.

Cappoquin will face Shamrocks in the first semi final at 5.30 while Tallow will meet Ballyduff Upper at 7 o'clock. The final will be held on Saturday, June 3.

Admission is €10 and all funds raised will go towards the redevelopment of Páirc Eamonn de Paor. Tallow chairman Terence McSweeney explained their plans on WLR's Lár Na Páirce show. "We're looking to build a stand on our bottom pitch, put a perimeter around the field and a community walkway. We're looking to build up our gym for the local area as well. That walkway will be lit by solar lights so we're hoping that it will be a real community thing."

Bragging rights will be at the stake this weekend. "We can say that the far west is falling behind. We can stand around and give out about it or try and do something about it. Games with a bit of intensity. a bit of bite, local rivalry. You're not going up to a league game and just fulfilling the fixture, we're looking at giving proper hurling where there is a bit of pride at stake. This will be an ongoing thing; we're hoping next year that it gets bigger and better."
