For the first time, ladies Gaelic footballers will be given travel expenses to to accommodate the rising cost of playing their game.
The LGFA (ladies gaelic football association) has made it known to county boards that they are to provide 50 cent per mile travel expenses to members for the duration of the qualifying rounds of the All-Ireland Championships.
The players are estimated to be spending on average €55 per week travelling to games and training according to Cliona Foley in todays Irish Independent.
Due to the latest level 5 restrictions, players are less able to travel to games in busses and players are now required to drive far more often - this has brought around an increase in cost to the players.
A recent report from the WGPA has outlined that on average only 7% of female intercounty players are receiving travel expenses, with the vast majority spending from their own pocket in order to play intercounty games.
It is not yet understood whether the funding will be extended into the knockout stages of the championship.
