"It's a special, special group" Shona Curran on joining Déise backroom team

Shona Curran is enjoying her new role as Waterford camogie selector this season.

The Lismore All Ireland winner retired from the inter county game at the end of 2021 but Sean Power approached her over the winter to join the backroom team. “I got a phone call off Sean after he was appointed back in November asking me would I come on board. Initially, I said no a few times! I sat down with him then properly and he went through his plan for the year and the team he had around him. He is definitely a tough man to say no to! After speaking to him, it was always going to be a yes. I knew that there was a great panel there. The plan that Sean came in with and the freshness of it was definitely appealing. Just absolutely delighted to be involved.”

Being a selector is more stressful than playing. “Leading up to a big game, as a player, there's a bit of nerves and the minute the ball is thrown in, they're gone. I find it's more nervous I get over the 60 minutes! It's a weird one. I'm pucking every ball on the sideline! Look, it's just great to be involved. It's a special, special group; I'm just trying to prolong being involved with them!”

Saturday's All Ireland Camogie Semi Final Waterford v Tipperary will be the Kiely Gaule Big Match on WLR. Join Tomás McCarthy and Claire Whyte for live coverage from Nowlan Park at 3.15.
